Tesla Model X Review: The Future-Here, Now!

Although more people are now environmentally conscious than ever before in human history, most of the electric vehicles that are on sale these days aren’t the sort of cars that anybody would really look forward to drive. These cars are flawed in many areas, be it range, looks, convenience, features, you name it.

However, billionaire Elon Musk and his company Tesla Motors have been launching electric cars that actually look and function really well. After a dodgy start, the company released cars such as the fantastic Model S sedan. Tesla’s new crossover SUV vehicle, the Model X, continues along the same line of thought.

Features

Being a Tesla, the whole vehicle looks as though it’s been sent back in time from the future. From the outside, you notice the gigantic windshield that extends so far onto the roof that it forms a semi-panoramic sunroof and electrically powered gullwing doors that Tesla calls Falcon doors. These doors provide easy access to the middle and last rows, and can be opened fully even in cramped spaces.

The moment you step inside, the most evident aspect is that most of the traditional buttons, knobs and switches of the centre console have been replaced by a large, 17 inch portrait-oriented touchscreen that resembles an oversized iPad. In many ways, Tesla has reinvented the wheel with their cars, including the Model X. Take a look.

The list of features goes on to include Tesla’s famous semi-autonomous autopilot system which takes control of the steering, brakes, and speed when turned on, ambient interior illumination, HomeLink that is GPS-enabled, 20 or 22 inch alloys, 14-way power adjustable front seats with memory, LED headlights, fog lamps and dynamic turn indicators, air suspension with GPS memory that automatically raises or lowers ride height, and a powered tailgate.

The Model X will receive over the air (OTA) software updates on a regular basis that owners can install from their homes.

Powertrain

The Tesla Model X is driven by a powertrain (electric motors, drive inverters and automatic gearbox) that is liquid cooled. The juice is provided by a lithium-ion battery pack that can be of 75 kWh or 100 kWh capacity, depending on the buyer’s preference. Thanks to technology such as regenerative braking, the Model X can be driven up to 295 miles on a single charge.

Model X will is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 in an estimated 2.9 seconds in “Ludicrous Mode”, a Tesla battery and circuitry innovation.

Needless to mention, owners of the Model X will also have access to Tesla’s supercharger network of high speed charging points, meaning that long journeys are actually possible even though this is a fully electric car.

Safety

Tesla markets the Model X as “The Safest SUV Ever”. On the safety front, Tesla has equipped the Model X with tyre pressure monitoring, automatic emergency braking, a crash sensor that disconnects the high voltage supply, 12 airbags, and a surround view camera. As a result, the Model X is the first SUV ever to achieve a 5-star safety rating in every category and sub-category. The vehicle also has a roll-over risk half that of any SUV on the road.
