Volvo Cars has been on the forefront of automotive safety for several decades. The company has various safety innovations to their credit, that include the ubiquitous 3-point seat belt, curtain airbags, blind spot monitoring, automatic braking, whiplash protection and many others. However, Volvo’s models have long been thought of as boring in the design department. The company changed all that with the launch of their flagship sedan, the Volvo S90.

Volvo has ensured that the S90 is brimming with state-of-the-art gadgetry. Bundled in with the car are features such as LED headlight clusters, alloy wheels that range in size from 18 to 20 inches, 10-way powered front seats that has a memory function on the driver’s side, a navigation module, a 12.3 inch driver’s digital display and much more.

The S90 also gets a 4-zone automatic climate control with air quality monitoring, a 9 inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system, voice control, rear seat entertainment, air suspension, three driving modes (eco, normal and sport), heated front seats, and a premium sound system from Bowers & Wilkins, among others.

Buyers can choose from one of three powertrain options for their Volvo S90. The smallest of them is a 250 hp engine that puts out 258 lb. ft. of torque. It comes mated with an 8 speed automatic transmission and there is an option to have it either with front wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The larger motor is a 316 hp gasoline unit that is turbocharged and supercharged to produce 316 hp. This trim level comes as an AWD model only.

Volvo also has a plug-in hybrid version of the S90, which is driven by a gasoline engine that works in tandem with an electric motor to deliver 400 hp and 472 lb. ft. of torque to all four wheels.

This is where any Volvo car really shines. You get semi-autonomous driving, run-off road mitigation that keeps the car within the white lines on the road automatically, driver alert control, automatic braking before and after collision, City Safety with steering support, hill start assist, rear parking assist, a head-up display (HUD), collision mitigation, pedestrian and cyclist detection, large animal detection, electronic stability control, whiplash protection, and so on.
