BMW was founded over a century ago in 1916 in Bavaria, Southern Germany. The company started off making aircraft and aircraft engines, but was forced to close its factory doors after World War I ended in 1918. The company then picked up the production of motorbikes under the name of BMW Motorrad a few years later and, in 1928, added the manufacturing of automobiles. As of today, BMW owns other iconic automotive brands such as Mini and Rolls-Royce.

BMW Model Range

The current BMW model range for North American markets is quite extensive. On sale are the BMW 2 Series, which can be bought as a 2+2 seater coupe or convertible; the brilliant BMW 3 Series in sedan, Gran Turismo (GT) and station wagon body styles; and the new BMW 4 Series, which can be ordered as a 2 door coupe, a 4 door Gran Coupe or as a 2 door convertible.

The superbly dignified BMW 5 Series can be bought as a sedan only, while the 6 Series is available as both a convertible and a Gran Coupe. Lastly in the sedan segment, BMW sells the 7 Series, which is its flagship model. BMW also has the Z4 roadster in its product line-up, along with five X series SUVs that include the X1, the X3, the X4, the X5, and the SUV range-topping X6.

The BMW M Tuning Division

Apart from these mainstream models, BMW has an in-house M tuning division which modifies a lot of engineering factors and adds much more explosive powertrain to make these cars incredibly powerful. The 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 6 Series, X5 and X6 receive the magic of the M division and are sold as the M2, M3, M4, M6 Gran Coupe, X5 M and X6 M respectively. BMW has also made its foray into the world of green, eco-friendly motoring with its i Series hybrid electric vehicles. Currently, there are only two cars under BMW’s i banner, the i3 and the i8.

BMW Manufacturing

Although the company has production facilities spread across the globe, the biggest is its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. Ever since its inception 25 years ago, BMW has invested over USD 8 billion in this facility, and there’s a further planned investment of USD 600 million between 2018 and 2021. Today, this plant, being staffed by nearly 10,000 employees, can churn out 450,000 BMW vehicles on an annual basis and nearly 70% heads for the export markets.

BMW Sales

Sales of BMW brand vehicles went up by 0.4% in June this year to a total of 28,962 compared to 28,855 vehicles that were sold in June 2016. In total, the BMW Group in the United States (BMW and Mini combined) reported June 2017 sales of 33,372 vehicles, which was a dip of 1.2% from the 33,769 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago.

Vehicles that performed particularly well in sales in June 2017 include the BMW 5 Series, which rose by just under 43% to 4,068 cars, the BMW X1 which increased by 62.5% to 3,221 vehicles, and the BMW X5 which went up by a little over 14% to 4,589 vehicles.

BMW incentives and Special Offers
