Lancia was the brainchild of Fiat racing drivers Vincenzo Lancia (1881-1937) and Claudio Fogolin (1872-1945) who founded the company in Turin on 29 November 1906. The first car off the Lancia line was the Tipo 51, later named Alfa. The Lancia Alfa remained in production from 1907 to 1908. In 1915, Lancia started manufacturing its first truck, the Lancia Jota.
In 1937, Lancia invited the legendary Vittorio Jano, designer of Alfa Romeo models to join the company.

Lancia Innovations in Automotive History
Lancia is credited with many of the automotive innovations that later became milestones in automotive history. The Theta of 1913 was the first European production car to feature a complete electrical system as standard equipment.
The Lambda, Lancia’s first car adopting a monocoque chassis, featured an independent front suspension that incorporated the spring and hydraulic damper into a single unit.
The first 5 speed gearbox to be fitted to a production car was the Series 3 Ardea, in1948.
Apart from being the first manufacturer of V4 engines, Lancia also premiered the first full-production V6 engine, in the 1950 Aurelia, after experimenting with V8 and V12 powertrains.
Other innovations involved the use of independent suspension in production cars and rear transaxles, first fitted on the Aurelia and Flaminia range.
Strangely, it was this constant quest for automotive innovation which made Lancia financially unviable. Lancia cars had to be hand-made, resulting in huge cost escalations.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Lancia had great success in rallying, winning many World Rally Championships.
Lancia Delta
During the 1980s, the company cooperated with Saab Automobile, with the Lancia Delta being sold as the Saab 600 in Sweden. The 1985 Lancia Thema also shared a platform with the Saab 9000, Fiat Croma and the Alfa Romeo 164. During the 1990s, all models were closely related to other Fiat models.
Lancia Ypsilon
The present Lancia Italian lineup comprises of the Ypsilon Collections range with five models – the Ypsilon Mya, Ypsilon 30th Anniversary, Ypsilon Elle, Ypsilon Elefantino ’14, and Ypsilon Momodesign.
