Mercury Stock Images – Sedans, Coupes and SUVs
Mercury is a famous American automotive manufacturer that, for nearly its whole life, has produced vehicles that have been positioned as entry level premium models. Mercury vehicles were positioned in such a way that they aimed to bridge the rather wide gulf in terms of price between Ford’s entry level cars and the high end, premium cars sold by Lincoln.

The company came into existence in the year 1938, just prior to the commencement of the First World War. Mercury was headquartered in the city of Dearborn, Michigan, which also plays home to another automotive giant, Ford. Throughout its life, Mercury was wholly owned by the Ford Motor Company, as it was established by Edsel Ford, the son of the great Henry Ford himself.
The first automobile manufactured by Mercury was an entirely new model that shared no body panel sections with any other vehicle from Lincoln or Ford. During its later years however, Mercury, Lincoln and Ford shared several vehicles between each other with slight cosmetic alterations and rebadged nameplates.

Mercury Sedans
Mercury Sedans
The Mercury Milan was one of the company’s more popular sedans. This mid-size, 4 door sedan was built on the Ford CD3 platform that was designed by Mazda. The vehicle was powered by various different powertrain options throughout its lifecycle, which included a 2.3 liter, 4 cylinder, 160 hp engine; a 2.5 liter, 4 cylinder, 174 hp motor; or a 3.0 liter, 221 hp, V6 engine.
While the 2.5L version of the Mercury Milan was also available with a 156 hp Atkinson cycle hybrid powertrain layout, buyers of the V6 model could select between front wheel drive and all wheel drive. Most recently, buyers of the Milan were again given the 3.0 liter V6 engine option but, it had been up-rated to develop 240 hp. The option to choose between FWD and 4WD was also left unchanged.
The most popular and widely known model from the Mercury product portfolio was their Grand Marquis sedan. This vehicle was Mercury’s equivalent of the Ford Crown Victoria and it had been on sale all the way back from the year 1975. Under its hood was a 4.6L V8 motor that was tuned to produce either 224 hp or 239 hp, depending on the trim level.
Mercury Coupes
The most famous coupe among Mercury’s cars was the Cougar. Although the Cougar badge has been applied to several Mercury products over the years including luxury cars and mid-size cars, the most recent was featured on their sport compact vehicle. The Mercury Cougar had multiple engine options over the years for buyers to choose from, and they ranged in size from a 3.8 liter V6 to a huge 5.0 liter V8.
Mercury SUVs and Minivans
The company had quite a few SUVs in its model range at different points of time but, one of their bestsellers was the Mercury Mariner. This SUV had Ford’s CD2 underpinnings and a 3.0 liter V6 motor that was tuned to deliver improved fuel efficiency. In later years, Mercury also added flex fuel technology to this engine so that it could be run on both regular unleaded fuel and E85 fuel.
Mercury had also rebadged a Ford developed minivan and sold it as the Mercury Monterey. Powering it was a 4.2 liter V6 engine and it was stacked with features such as powered sliding side doors, heated or cooled seats at the front, and rear seat entertainment systems.
Mercury Sales Figures
Sales of Mercury branded vehicles were high around the turn of the century but then began to decline over the following years. The company was eventually discontinued and some of its vehicles were absorbed into and rebranded by Mercury’s parent organization Ford.
