American vehicle manufacturer Pontiac was created, developed, and marketed entirely by automotive giant General Motors (GM). The company had a wide product range comprising of several styles of vehicles. Pontiac relied heavily on the iconic brand image of many of their cars such as the Pontiac Firebird muscle car and the Pontiac Solstice, among others. The genesis of Pontiac came from General Motors’ thought of providing a companion make for their Oakland line of vehicles, which was a more expensive range.

General Motors believed that customers would aspire to purchase vehicles that were more upmarket and premium if the manufacturer met certain price points. GM started with the low price Chevrolet brand, and then introduced more expensive brands such as Oldsmobile and Buick, finally culminating at their flagship range, Cadillac.

Pontiac was established in the city of the same name in Michigan in the year 1926. A few years later, the company moved its headquarters to Detroit.

Although it was initially conceived as a companion make for Oakland Cars, Pontiac quickly overtook Oakland in popularity and sales performance, eventually ending up replacing Oakland entirely in the early 1930s.

The Pontiac G6 was designed, developed and built to serve as a replacement for the aging Pontiac Grand Am. Over its lifecycle, the G6 has been powered by a varied list of engines that range in size from 2.4 liter, 4 cylinder motors to 3.9 liter V6 units. The car had the same underpinnings as other sedans in its segment such as the Saab 9-3, the Chevrolet Malibu, and numerous other vehicles built by General Motors.

Pontiac Hatchbacks

Pontiac entered into a deal with Toyota to jointly develop a hatchback. The result of this union was the Pontiac Vibe, which debuted as the successor to the old Chevrolet Prizm. The Vibe was derived from the Toyota Corolla and it was even rebadged as the Toyota Voltz and sold in the Japanese car market for a few years.

Throughout its life, the Pontiac Vibe had been driven by several engine options including the 1.8 liter, 4 cylinder gasoline motor and Toyota’s 2.4 liter, 4 cylinder unit. Buyers could also specify the Pontiac Vibe with 4WD.

Pontiac Sportscars

Pontiac was best known for some of their iconic sportscars and muscle cars. Vehicles such as the Pontiac GTO and the Pontiac Firebird have been displayed everywhere from bedroom walls to the cinema screens.

The company’s most recent sportscar was the Pontiac Solstice, which was on sale as both a hardtop coupe and a convertible with a folding fabric roof.

The car came equipped with features such as a limited slip differential and GM’s own traction control system. Several different concept and special edition versions of the Solstice were introduced, and the car had also entered several motorsports events.

The Solstice had the classic front mid-engined configuration, meaning that the bulk of the engine was actually behind the front axle. This gave the car excellent weight distribution, and the power was sent to the rear wheels for ideal handling. As the car was very light (it tipped the scales at under 2,900 lb.), it didn’t even need huge engines to deliver performance. Buyers of the Solstice could choose between a 2.0 liter motor that was turbocharged or a 2.4 liter, 4 cylinder engine.

Pontiac Sales Figures

The sales figures of Pontiac vehicles used to float around the half a million unit mark annually during the turn of the century and the following few years. However, it then began to decline steeply after 2007 and eventually in late 2010, operations of Pontiac were discontinued and the franchise agreements with its dealerships were not renewed. Parent company General Motors took a decision to focus more on its remaining four vehicle brands in the North American region.
