Saab Car Stock Images – Sedans, SUVs, and Station Wagons

Saab belongs to one of those rare breeds of automobile manufacturers from the northern European region of Scandinavia. This Swedish firm has been known for their manufacturing of military aircraft and sophisticated defence hardware, and the company used this heritage to promote their automotive products as well. Safety was a high priority for Saab and many of their innovations are now commonplace in modern cars.

The company was also recognized for their cars which were loaded with futuristic innovations such as headlight washers and wipers, self-repairing bumpers, a turbocharged engine with a wastegate installed to control boost pressure, pollen filter in the passenger cabin, anti-knock sensors to improve fuel economy, brake pads that were asbestos-free, active head restraints that reduce the risk of whiplash during collisions, and electronic brake force distribution (EBD).

The company even moved the location of the ignition key from its usual spot behind the steering wheel to near the gear lever, as drivers’ kneecaps were frequently shattered during collisions due to the knee impacting the key.

Saab Automobile came into existence in Sweden just as the Second World War wound up in the year 1945. Over its life, the company has formed alliances and changed ownership several times. Saab has partnered with companies such as Scania and has been under the ownership of Spyker, NEVS and General Motors (GM).

Saab Sedans

One of the company’s highest selling sedans across the globe was the Saab 9-3. This executive sedan was first released way back in 1998, and it was an immediate hit. The 9-3 provided its buyers with the option of choosing from a wide variety of 4 cylinder and V6 petrol and diesel motors that ranged in power output from 120 hp to 276 hp. Customers could also choose manual or automatic transmissions, depending on the trim level, and get a long list of features as standard.

Buyers who wanted a bigger car had the option of going in for a Saab 9-5. Prospective customers of the 9-5 could choose between gasoline and diesel engine options that ranged in displacement from 1.6 liters to 2.8 liters. Power outputs of these motors varied between 160 hp and just under 300 hp. The Saab 9-5 was also known for being awarded a 5 star safety rating in the Euro NCAP safety tests.

Saab SUVs

Saab had a few SUVs in their model range over the years but one of the better selling versions in recent times was the Saab 9-4X. This compact luxury crossover had either a 2.8 liter, turbocharged, 300 hp V6 or a larger 3.0 liter, 265 hp V6 under its hood and it was built by General Motors at their production facility in Mexico.

The company also had the larger luxury SUV, the Saab 9-7X. Buyers could choose from either one straight 6 cylinder motor (a 4.2L unit) or two V8 engines (a 5.3L unit or a 6.0L unit). Saab pampered buyers of the 9-7X with gadgets such as multiple airbags, a Bose sound system, full leather upholstery and heated front seats, OnStar and HomeLink, and an optional touchscreen navigation module. All trim levels of the 9-7X had all wheel drive (AWD) as standard.

Saab Convertibles and Station Wagons

The Saab 9-3 sedan was also sold as a convertible model with a retractable fabric soft-top. The engines and gearboxes on offer were from the same line-up as that of the 9-3 sedan, as was the majority of the list of features. At a certain point of time, the Saab 9-3 was also sold in a station wagon version called the 9-3 SportCombi. The SportCombi badge was also used for the station wagon version of the Saab 9-5 as well.

Saab Sales Figures

The sales figures of Saab branded vehicles hovered around the 40,000 unit mark annually during the turn of the century, but then began to decline over the following years. The company was eventually discontinued and its planned resurrection was scrapped when its parent organization declared bankruptcy.
