Saturn was GM’s answer to Japanese car companies. Branded as a “different kind of car” offering unique models and a separate retailer network, the Saturn culture of no-haggle pricing and friendly service was an initial hit, and by 1994, Saturn became the third best-selling model in the U.S. However Saturn failed in sustaining this initial success.

After the aborted Penske Automotive bid to acquire Saturn in September 2009, General Motors discontinued the Saturn brand on October 31, 2010. Prior to shutdown, production was stopped earlier that month at the Spring Hill assembly plant in Tennessee.

James McDonald. Twelve months later, the first Saturn demonstration vehicle was revealed. On January 7, 1985, the Saturn Corporation was officially founded as a private, employee-owned company, and GM bought them out.
