Scion was one of the more recent entrants in the automotive scene. The company was created as a Toyota division that was tasked specifically with creating vehicles that would appeal more towards the younger section of the car buying crowd. The company focussed so heavily on this angle that they sold their vehicles in a single trim level, but with several factory and aftermarket options so that buyers could personalize their cars. Even the company’s marketing strategy primarily targeted the youth and they relied extensively on viral and guerrilla marketing methods.

The idea for a brand that became Scion originated in the year 1999 when Toyota came up with a project called Genesis, which was a concept that involved a marque nestled within a marque, in an effort to bring younger American car buyers to within the Toyota fold.

Initially, this initiative did not meet with much success and Toyota tried again soon after with a new plan called Project Exodus. A digital design company that was based in Los Angeles was roped in to create the logo and website, and lay the groundwork for developing the brand. The project was soon after renamed to Scion.

Scion Hatchbacks

The first of Scion’s hatchbacks and, quite possibly, one of their most successful models is the Scion iM. The vehicle was launched in its production version guise in 2015, after introducing it as a concept hatch a year earlier at the Los Angeles auto show.

To appeal to the youth, the company kitted out the iM with aggressive looking body kits, beefy 19 inch alloy rims and upgraded performance brakes. To make the car look the part, its suspension was lowered so that it appeared to hug the road.
Powering the Scion iM is a 1.8 liter, 4 cylinder gasoline motor that puts out 137 bhp, and buyers have the opportunity of choosing between a 6 speed manual gearbox and a CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic.

The Scion iQ is based on the car that was manufactured by parent company Toyota, the Toyota iQ. Equipped with a tiny 1.3 liter, 4 cylinder engine that was reasonably powerful and extremely fuel efficient at the same time, this little car is perfectly positioned as a city runabout, ideal for zipping through traffic jams and having the ability to park nearly everywhere. The company used safety as a marketing pitch as the car offered 11 airbags in its passenger cabin, and it worked.

The company also has its uniquely designed, cube shaped compact vehicle, the Scion xB. Apart from Toyota’s tried and tested 1.5L and 1.8L motors, the xB also provides its buyers with the option of choosing the 2.4 liter, 4 cylinder engine rated to 158 hp. The vehicle provided one of the roomiest interiors in its segment.

Scion Coupes

The company produces two coupe models, with the first one being the Scion FR-S. This vehicle is an extremely popular model and sold across the globe under several names, the most used being the Subaru BRZ and the Toyota 86.

Driving enthusiasts waited years for the new version to release as the original became famous for its strong engine, light weight and simplistic approach to top grade driving dynamics. Apart from the FR-S, the company also has the Scion tC coupe, which is considered to be the spiritual successor of the brilliant Celica coupe.

Scion Sales and Special Offers

The sales of Scion vehicles has remained reasonably steady for the most part, although at times they have raked up to nearly 173,000 vehicles during a calendar year of sales. The company has had several well selling models in its product portfolio over the years, such as the iQ hatchback, which sold nearly 16,000 units during its product lifecycle. The company had a selection of leasing options, financing plans and other financial benefits for their prospective clients.
