SsangYong started out by making jeeps for military applications, and trucks and buses. The company stayed in this line for well over a decade, manufacturing several special purpose vehicles. SsangYong has always had an SUV-maker image, and that is clearly evident from their model range which is made up almost entirely of SUVs.
The company came into existence as 2 separate companies in 1954. These two units merged in 1963 to form the Ha Dong-Hwan Motor Company. At this stage, the company was into the manufacturing of tough military jeeps for use by the United States Army. The current name of the company, SsangYong, was used only from 1986 onwards, after it was taken over by the SsangYong Business Group in the same year.
At various points in its history, SsangYong Motor Co. has either partnered with or been taken over by Daimler Benz, Daewoo Motors and others. Currently, the company is owned by the Indian conglomerate, Mahindra & Mahindra.
