The company, in its current form, was set up in 1953 and was the automotive production wing of Fuji Heavy Industries. Subaru has now partnered with Toyota Motor Corporation and they share a few vehicles between them.
Prior to that, the company was into producing aircraft and then moved into the manufacturing of scooters after World War II. It was only in the 1950s that Subaru manufactured their first ever car, the 1500. A decade later, one of their models, the Subaru 1000, saw the introduction of their first ever boxer engine, something for which Subaru is famous for even today.
The Boxer Engine
Unlike conventional engines where the pistons move up and down, a boxer engine lies flat and its pistons move from side to side. This resemblance to the punches thrown by a boxer is what led to people calling it a boxer engine.
The boxer engine design additionally contributed to the famous Subaru reliability. Since the pistons lie partially below the engine oil level, they always remain lubricated. The more regular sort of engines used in cars nowadays do not receive full lubrication for the first couple of minutes of ignition, and hence can receive increased wear and tear.
